Winter Park, Fla. - The #5 Grand Valley State baseball team finished up its spring trip on Saturday (Mar. 10) with a 2-1 loss to Rollins. Coming in to the game batting .402 on the spring trip, the Laker bats were only able to muster six hits, the first time on the trip with single digits in the hit column.
In what appeared to be a pitcher's duel early, Rollins was held without a hit until the bottom of the third when they put together a small rally. A lead-off single followed by a walk put the Lakers in trouble and a sacrifice bunt moved both runners over. A line drive single in to left field brought the game's first run in on the next at-bat.
The sixth inning saw Rollins push across another run on a bloop single over the short stop's head with runners on the corners and two out.
GVSU finally got on the board in the ninth inning. After two quick outs, Anderson doubled for the second time in the game, this time to right-center field. He was then brought in with a single by sophomore Giancarlo Brugnoni over the second baseman's head to cut the lead in half. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Lakers could get as a fly ball to center field ended the game.
The Lakers were only able to muster six hits in the game, three of them off the bat of senior Steve Anderson.
Senior starter Ryan Garman (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Garman threw four innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four. Senior Cory Baker threw three innings in relief, allowing two hits and one run (zero earned) while striking out three. Junior Brad Zambron had a scoreless inning of relief.
GVSU falls to 6-4 on the year with the loss while Rollins moves to 14-6 overall.
The Lakers will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 17) when they play a doubleheader at Urbana slated to begin at 1 p.m.
