INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Despite dropping each of the doubles matches, the No. 25 Grand Valley State women’s tennis team rallied during singles competition to pick up a 5-4 win against Indianapolis on Friday evening at the UIndy Tennis Center.
With a win in its first official match of the spring, GVSU improves to 14-3 on the season, while UIndy evens to 2-2.
The Lakers dropped behind 3-0 after the doubles competition, but their efforts in singles gave them the win. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Niki Shipman (Saline, Mich.) won 6-2, 6-1 over Alena Perez-Majul. Both Shipman and Perez-Majul are ranked 16th and 18th, respectively, in the Midwest regional rankings. In the second spot, senior Tara Hayes (Shelby Township, Mich.), regionally ranked at 16th, won 6-3, 6-2, against Maggie Ashby.
Sophomore Lexi Rice (Augusta, Mich.) won 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 4 spot, while classmate Anne Marie Morin (Rochester Hills, Mich.) won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Rounding out the singles victories, was junior Allison Fecko (Grand Rapids, Mich.) who needed three sets to get the win, but defeated Rachel Barger, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
GVSU now plays against Drury on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Indianapolis.
