NCAA Selection Show (Monday - 7:30 p.m.)
ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's soccer team won it sixth straight GLIAC Tournament Championship with a 4-0 win against Saginaw Valley on Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Field. The Lakers learn their postseason bid on Monday at 7:30 p.m. on the NCAA Selection Show.
GVSU heads to the NCAA Tournament with an 18-1-2 mark on the year, while Saginaw Valley closes out its season with a 10-4-5 record. The Lakers extend their home unbeaten streak to 49 games as well and record their 17th shut out of the season.
Senior Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wis.) recorded the game-winning goal in the 12th minute when she was able to send home a goal that bounced off the hands of keeper Laura Ivezaj. She now owns six game-winning goals on the year and ties former Laker Katy Tafler with 25 career game-winners.
In the 20th minute, senior Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) connected with sophomore Juane Odendaal (London, Ontario) for the second tally of the game. Odendaal sent a long pass from the left side of the field to the middle of the box where Hilbert turned her head on it to score her fifth goal of the season.
Less than five minutes later, the Lakers added to their lead when Botts found Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) on the right side of the 18-yard box. Brown then turned and fired home her ninth goal of the year.
Junior Autumn Jacobs (Saline, Mich.) notched the final goal of the game in the 35th minute on a pass from Kayla Addison from the left side of the field. A misplay by the Cardinal keeper allowed Addison to maneuver past a defender and find Jacobs waiting at the top of the six-yard line to score.
For the game, Grand Valley State held a 16-9 edge in shots. The Lakers also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks with four coming in the first eight minutes of the game. Ivezaj picked up five saves in the loss, while GVSU keeper senior Chelsea Parise (Sterling Heights, Mich.) had seven stops. Parise notched her 14th shut out of the season and 58th of her career.
