MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated Wayne State, 5-3, in the second round of the GLIAC Championship to advance to the championship game.The Lakers face Northwood at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday for the conference title.
GVSU won a pair of doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Leah Dancz and senior Allison Fecko picked up an 8-5 victory ini the No. 2 spot. Junior Niki Shipman and freshman Claire Cooper shut out Jessica Kruczek and Tanya Joseph, 8-0, in the No. 3 slot.
Wayne State was able to pick up two singles wins, but the Lakers were able to grab three and secure the win. Junior Lexi Rice defeated Alex Poissant, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Kali Phillips won, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 6 slot. Cooper wrapped up the singles victories with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles.
The Lakers played Northwood in the GLIAC Championship match in 2011, falling 5-2.
