TIFFIN, Ohio - Senior forward Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wisc.) notched two first-half goals for the Grand Valley State soccer team as the Lakers defeated Tiffin, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Paradiso Fields.
The win improves the Lakers to 11-1-2 on the year and 7-1-1 in league action, while Tiffin drops to 5-6-2 on the year and 3-4-2 in the GLIAC.
Grand Valley State got on the board just 10 minutes into the game when senior Alyssa Mira (Livonia, Mich.) connected with Botts for the 1-0 lead.
Botts struck again later in the half rebounding her own shot off the post and turning it back past keeper Hayley Coppola to make it a 2-0 game.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second half and the Lakers rebounded from their first loss of the season to take the game. GVSU owned a a 39-2 edge in shots including a 19-0 advantage in shots on target. Senior keeper Chelsea Parise (Sterling Heights, Mich.) picked up her ninth shut out of the year.
Botts and classmate Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) each tallied a team-high seven shots, while senior Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) and freshman Kelly Capoccia (Livonia, Mich.) each notched five.
The Lakers return home for a pair of games beginning on Friday, Oct. 19 against Michigan Tech at 7 p.m. GVSU then hosts Northern Michigan on Sunday at 11 a.m. for Senior Night.
