Lakers Fall at Lake Superior State, 69-57

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's basketball team dropped a 69-57 decision to Lake Superior State on Saturday (Jan. 7). Senior James Thomas was the only Laker in double figures, scoring 16 points and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

Lake Superior State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first basket of the game and extended the lead to 6-1 before GVSU made a small comeback. A layup by junior Tyrone Lee and a three-pointer from junior Josh Anderson tied the game at six, but that's when Lake Superior State took the lead back and kept it for the rest of the game.

With Lake Superior State leading 9-8, LSSU went on a seven point run, all free throws, to push their lead out to 16-8. They extended the lead 25-15 with 3:41 to play in the first half, but GVSU went on a run to end the first half, going on a 9-2 run to end the first half down 27-24.

Junior Tyrone Lee led GVSU in the first half with six points and three rebounds but the Lakers shot only 24.1-percent from the field while Lake Superior State hit 36.8-percent of their shots, including three trifectas compared to GVSU's one.

In the second half, Lake Superior State extended their lead out to a game-high 21 points with a 59-38 advantage with only 3:38 to play in the game. GVSU cut the lead down to 10 at 67-57 after a layup from freshman Ryan Sabin, but it was with only 12 seconds to play as GVSU fell, 69-57.

GVSU shot only 31.6-percent from the field for the game, including 4-of-17 from beyond the arc. Thomas was the only GVSU player in double figures with his 16 points, while his nine rebounds was a game-high. Junior guard Breland Hogan had nine points while junior Josh Anderson had eight points.

Lake Superior State had three players in double figures, led by Derek Billing who scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

GVSU falls to 9-4 on the season with a 5-2 mark in the GLIAC while Lake Superior State moves to 7-6 overall with a 2-4 record in the conference.

The Lakers will be back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 11), when they take on Northwood at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at 8 p.m.
