Lakers Fall At Cedarville, 71-58

Cedarville, Ohio - Grand Valley State dropped a 71-58 non-conference decision at Cedarville Tuesday night (Jan. 31). GVSU, which falls to 10-9 overall, will host Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Feb. 2) at 8 p.m.

GVSU built a 21-15 lead following a Nick Waddelllayup in the paint with 5:49 remaining in the first-half, but Cedarville outscored the Lakers 11-2 for the remainder of the half and led 26-23 after 20 minutes of action.

Tyrone Lee tied the game for the sixth time (27-27) and a Breland Hogan layup at the 16:30 mark gave GVSU a 29-28 lead. Cedarville built a 37-33 lead, but the Lakers came back yet again and tied it at 37-37 on a layup from James Thomas. However, 9-0 run by the Yellow Jackets upped the lead to 46-37. GVSU continued to battle and pulled to within three (55-52) on a pair of free throws from Breland Hoganwith 4:06 left in the game. A three-point play, followed by back-to-back three-pointers gave Cedarville a 66-53 lead with just 1:42 left in the game.

James Thomas led GVSU with 22 points and eight rebounds, but converted just 9-of-22 shots from the floor and 2-of-10 from the three-point line. Nick Waddell added 16 points and Breland Hogan10 for the Lakers. GVSU shot just 35.5 percent from the field (22-for-62) and 11.8 percent (2-for-17) from the three-point line. GVSU outrebounded Cedarville 35-26, including a 19-4 advantage on the offensive glass, but the Yellow Jackets converted 21-of-40 shots from the floor and 19-of-23 from the charity stripe.

Four Yellow Jackets reach double figures, led by Marcus Reineke's 17 points off the bench. Zach Brown scored 11 points and dished out eight assists.
