Grand Valley State dropped a 65-57 decision at Ferris State Saturday (Jan. 28) afternoon. GVSU falls to 10-8 overall and 6-6 in GLIAC action, while the Bulldogs improve to 11-7 overall and 8-3 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will be at Cedarville College Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m., before hosting Saginaw Valley State Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m.
Ferris State led from start to finish in this GLIAC contest. The Bulldogs' Kenny Brown hit a 3-pointer at the 18:51 mark of the first half for the first points of the game. GVSU's Mike Przydzial answered with a layup, but Brown hit a jumper to give FSU a 5-2 lead. Ferris State built a 14-4 lead seven minutes into the game.
Przydzial, Ryan Sabin and James Thomas converted three buckets for the Lakers to pull within four (14-10) and GVSU trailed by just three (16-13) after a three-point play from freshman forward Ben Lanning. FSU answered with a 9-0 run to build a 25-13 lead with 4:49 left in the first half. GVSU's Breland Hogan scored five points in the final 3:45, while Tyrone Lee and Przydzial each added buckets, but the Bulldogs' Dietrich Lever scored at the buzzer to give FSU a 33-22 halftime lead.
Ferri State built it largest lead of the game (48-34) on Jerrell Sanders layup with 7:40 remaining, but the Lakers battled back behind eight points from Hogan and six from Thomas. Nick Waddell added four points, Tony Peters three and Lee added a bucket as GVSU outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 over a six minute stretch to pull within five. However, Ferris State converted four free throws in the closing minute to secure a 65-57 win.
Thomas and Hogan led GVSU with 13 points apiece, while Przydzial and Waddell added eight and seven, respectively. Lee chipped in six points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds. Hogan added four assists and eight rebounds for the Lakers. GVSU outrebounded FSU 40-28, but turned the ball over 16 times compared to Ferris' six miscues. Four Bulldogs scored in double figures and 63 of FSU's 65 points came from the starters.
