GVSU Claims A 64-50 Win At Michigan Tech

Houghton, Mich. - Grand Valley State claimed a 64-50 victory over Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon in Houghton, Mich. GVSU improves to 10-7 overall and 6-5 in GLIAC action, while Michigan Tech falls to 9-8 overall and 7-3 in league action. The Lakers will be at Ferris State Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m.

GVSU's Tyrone Lee opened the game with a tip-in and James Thomas followed with a three pointer to fuel a 14-0 run to start the game. Thomas added a layup, followed by a layup from Nick Waddell and a three-pointer from Breland Hogan to up the lead to 12-0. Waddell pushed the GVSU lead to 14-0 with 11:45 remaining in the first half before the Huskies got on the scoreboard at the 10:49 mark. The Lakers led 28-14 with 4:49 left in the first half, but Michigan Tech went on a 6-0 run to pull within eight (28-20) at the break.

Michigan Tech opened the second half with a 7-2 run to pull with three (30-27), but back-to-back three-pointers from Thomas upped the Lakers' lead to 36-27 with 13:31. Thomas added a layup and Tony Peters finished the 11-0 run with a three-pointer of his own to give GVSU a 41-27 lead. Leading 45-33, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run to build it largest lead of the game (52-33) with 5:01 left.

Michigan Tech hit four three-pointers in the closing five minutes and pulled to within nine (59-50) with 1:22 left, but the Lakers hit five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

GVSU hit 23-of-50 shots from the floor, including 6-of-13 from the three-point line. The Lakers outrebounded MTU 32-26 and turned the ball over just seven times. The Huskies hit just 14-of-40 from the floor and 7-of-23 from the three-point line.

James Thomas led GVSU with 22 points, hitting 4-of-6 from the three-point line and the free throw line. Breland Hogan and Nick Waddell each chipped in 10 points for the Lakers. Austin Armga was the only player to reach double figures for the Huskies.
