Grand Valley State dropped a 67-60 NCAA DII Midwest Regional first-round game Friday night in Houghton, Mich. GVSU finishes the 2010-11 season with a 20-8 record. The Lakers will return four starters and all but one letterwinner for the 2011-12 campaign.
Grand Valley State led 28-27 at the half 55-54 with 3:27 left, but Drury outscored the Lakers 13-5 in the final 3:18 for the win. The Panthers went up 56-55 on a layup by Erica Groose and a short jumper by Drury's Casey Carroll upped the lead to 58-55. GVSU sophomore center Alex Stelfox answered with a jumper in the paint to cut the lead back to one (58-57) with 1:32 remaining. Drury's Ja'Nell Jones hit a big three-pointer with 1:19 left and the Panthers then hit six free throws to seal the game.
Briauna Taylor led the way with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Stelfox added 16 points, six blocks and six rebounds. Lauren Stodola chipped in 12 points and Biz Van Tiflin pulled down 14 rebounds in her final collegiate game.
