BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 3 Grand Valley State women’s soccer team scored its lone goal just 11 minutes into play, closing out the GLIAC regular season undefeated with a 1-0 win at Ferris State on Saturday afternoon at the Ferris State Soccer Field.
GVSU now prepares to host the semifinals of the GLIAC tournament on Friday at the GVSU Soccer Field. GVSU will face the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 quarterfinal game that takes place on Tuesday.
The Lakers extend their unbeaten streak to 36 games while finishing the season with a 16-0-2 record and a 15-0 ledger in the GLIAC, marking the first time since 2008 in which they won every conference game.
Junior Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) tallied her ninth goal of the season at the 10:08 mark off a pass from classmate Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.). Addison had a breakaway past the Ferris State defense on the right side and caught keeper Rachel McCollum off guard by passing it to Brown who fired the shot from the middle of the box.
The game was relatively quiet as GVSU took just 11 shots, while Ferris managed to get off two. The 11 shots are a season-tying low for the Lakers who are averaging 21 a game. GVSU also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Grand Valley State defense continued its strong play, blanking its opponents for the eighth straight game. Junior goalie Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) did not have to make a save in her 11th shutout, while McCollum picked up five.
