MIDLAND, Mich. – The third-seeded Grand Valley State women’s tennis team defeated sixth-seeded Lake Superior State, 5-0, in the GLIAC Women’s Tennis Tournament quarterfinals at the Midland Community Tennis Center on Friday night.
GVSU now advances to play the No. 2 Wayne State on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 3:45 p.m. The Lakers dropped a tightly contested, 5-4, match against the Warriors in the regular season and look to avenge that loss.
The Lakers swept the doubles points before picking up two wins in singles to take the match.
Sophomore Niki Shipman (Saline, Mich.) downed Adrienne DiVito, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot to make it a 3-0 match, while classmate Anne Marie Morin (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was also able to pick up a 6-1, 6-0 win in the No. 6 spot to take the match and advance to the semifinals.
Shipman and sophomore Lexi Rice won 8-3 over Holly Daniel and Teodora Gavric in the No. 3 doubles spot. In No. 1 doubles, seniors Tara Hayes (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Alyssa Lucas (Clarkston, Mich) won 8-2, while Leah Dancz (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Allison Fecko (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won the No. 2 spot, 8-3.
