No. 3 Lakers Upend Tiffin, 4-0

ALLENDALE, Mich. – No. 3 Grand Valley State women’s soccer tallied its sixth straight shutout in a 4-0 win against Tiffin on Friday night at the GVSU Soccer Field.  The Lakers host their final regular season home game against Findlay on Sunday at noon.

GVSU improves to 14-0-2 and 13-0 in the GLIAC, marking the third time in four years the Lakers have tallied 13 or more wins in the conference.  Tiffin falls to 7-6-2 on the season and 6-4-1 in the league play.

Junior Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) led the team with two goals, while classmate Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) notched a goal and an assist.  Senior Erin Mruz (Gurnee, Ill.) had two assists to now sit in a three-way tie in the GVSU record book with 41 career assists.

Addison got the Lakers on the board in the 11th minute from a pass from classmate Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wisc.).  Botts found Addison in front of the net who beat the keeper and fired a shot into the lower right corner.

At the 30:18 mark, Brown tallied her first goal of the game off a nicely placed corner kick from Mruz.  Brown notched her other goal of the game in the second half off a great pass from Addison from the right side.  Mruz started the play in the midfield, finding Addison on the right side who connected with Brown on the left side of the box for the final goal of the game.

Senior Lindsey Marlow (Livonia, Mich.) notched her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute.  Freshman Jenny Shaba (West Bloomfield, Mich.) streaked up the right side and passed to Marlow in the middle of the box.

For the game, the Lakers tallied 35 shots as the offense kept the ball in the Dragons’ territory.  Tiffin keepers Lindsey Gallagher and Hayley Coppola split time in net make nine and four saves, respectively.  GVSU goalie junior Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) and the Laker defense limited Tiffin to just two shots.  Parise picked up her ninth shutout victory of the season. 

GVSU celebrates its five seniors on Sunday as well as hosting its Breast Cancer Awareness Game.  The Lakers will be wearing pink warm-up t-shirts and pink accessories in support of breast cancer.  Fans are invited to wear pink in support of the cause as well.
