COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Charlie Socia’s (Portage, Mich.) second-half goal led the No. 5 Grand Valley State women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win at Ohio Dominican on Sunday afternoon at Panther Field.  The Lakers stay on the road to play Northwood on October 7 at 2 p.m. in Midland, Mich.

GVSU improves to 9-0-2 on the season and 8-0 in the GLIAC, while Ohio Dominican falls to 2-6-2 overall and 2-4-2 in conference play.  The Lakers extend their unbeaten streak to 27 games and notch their sixth shutout of the season.

The Panthers held the Lakers to their lowest shot total of the season (12), but allowed nine corner kicks, which was what GVSU needed to take the lead.  Senior Erin Mruz’s (Gurnee, Ill.) corner kick to the back post connected with Socia as she headed the ball into the net at 52:25.

The one goal was all GVSU needed as Ohio Dominican was limited to two shots, both on target. The Panthers’ best shot came in the 38th minute when Jennifer Holton’s ball hit the crossbar, but the other was scooped up by junior keeper Cheslea Parise (Warren, Mich.) picked up a save. Ohio Dominican’s keeper Laura Clark picked up five saves.
