No. 1 Lakers Shut Out Ferris State 3-0 In GLIAC Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - Grand Valley State's women's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout victory with a 3-0 win over Ferris State on Wednesday (Sept. 8). GVSU improves on its unbeaten streak to 62 regular season games and 40 unbeaten conference matches dating back to the 2006 season. The Lakers opened up Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play in Big Rapids, Mich. and will continue conference play on Friday (Sept. 10) will they travel to Midland, Mich. to face Northwood at 2:00 p.m.

"It is always great to start off the GLIAC schedule with a win," head coach David DiIanni comment on the victory. "What I liked about this game is that we had everyone contribute and three different players scored goals. In the second half we played with more passion and enthusiasm which created better, quality chances."

Grand Valley State scored its first goal during the 22nd minute, when sophomore Ashley Botts recorded her second goal of the year. Botts received a pass from freshman Kelsey Fiscus, then Botts veered the defender and tap the ball in from front of the goal, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead at half.

During the second half of play, junior Erin Mruz notched her second goal of the season after a Bulldog defender deflected the ball off of a corner kick at 53:03. GVSU added one more goal from Kayla Addison during the 71st minute. Senior Jenna Wenglinski and Fiscus set up the play for Addison, as she headed the ball in, giving Grand Valley State the 3-0 win.

The Lakers outshot Ferris State by a 26-12 margin, including a 13-8 advantage on shots on goal. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise recorded her third shutout victory and collected eight saves in the match. GVSU advances its record to 3-0, 1-0 GLIAC, while Ferris State falls to 0-3, 0-1 GLIAC.
