Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State notched its second nonconference win over Minnesota State-Mankato, 4-0 on Sunday (Sept. 5) in Allendale, Mich. The Lakers recorded their second straight shutout victory and received two goals from sophomore forward Kayla Addison. GVSU will start conference play on Sept. 8, when they travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to face Ferris State at 4:00 p.m.

"Today was a great game for our program this early in the year," head coach David DiIanni stated. "We started off slow in the first half, but the final 65 minutes I thought we played quicker and more direct through the midfiled. All four goals we scored were quality finishes and it was great to get everyone playing time."

The Lakers scored back-to-back goals in the first half, the first during the 31st minute. Sophomore Maria Brown put GVSU on the board when she rebounded a blocked shot and knocked it through the bottom left side of the net. Two minutes later at 33:16, sophomore Ashley Botts recorded her first goal of the year after she received a pass from senior Jaleen Dingledine. Botts received the ball in the middle of the field and scored from 18 yards out, giving Grand Valley State a 2-0 lead at half.

During the second half of play, Addison recorded back-to-back goals. At 78:34, freshman Shelby Humphries crossed the ball from the right side, where Addison knocked it in from 12 yards out. Nine minutes later Addison placed another ball in the back of the net after receiving a pass from the middle of the field from Erin Mruz, giving the Lakers the 4-0 win.

Grand Valley State controlled the ball for most of the game outshooting the Mavericks 25-6, including a 17-3 advantage in shots on frame. Goalie Chelsea Parise claimed her second shutout victory and recorded three saves in the match. The Lakers improve on their regular season unbeaten streak to 60 games, dating back to the 2006 season.
