Grand Valley State's women's soccer team dominated Lake Erie on Friday afternoon (Sept. 24) in Allendale, Mich. The Lakers had six different players score goals and record 46 shots, including 27 shots on goal. GVSU will host Ashland on Sunday (Sept. 26) at 12:00 p.m.
"It was nice to get back home to play," said head coach David DiIanni. "We were very focused on coming out with a sense of urgency and passion to play and I think we did that today."
The Lakers got on the scoreboard four minutes into the game after sophomore Alyssa Mira recorded her first goal of the year. Mira received a pass from senior Kristen Eible from the left side, where Mira placed the ball in the bottom left corner of the net. Eight minutes later Kayla Addison notched her fifth goal of the year when she rebounded a ball off of a blocked shot, giving GVSU a 2-0 led. Grand Valley State added two more goals in the first half after senior Jaleen Dingledine received a cross from Addison, knocking it in.
Grand Valley State recorded three-second half goals, the first from Maria Brown during the 60th minute. Three minutes later freshman Sam Decker notched her first collegiate goal in a Laker uniform after Brown crossed it over from the right. Decker tapped it in from two yards out, giving GVSU a 6-0 led. Erin Mruz added a goal at 76:07 after teammates Taylor Callen and Addison set up Mruz, where she then placed it in the back of the net from five yards out.
The Lakers recorded their sixth shutout win and held the Storm to just three shots, including two shots on goal. GVSU controlled the ball most of the game taking nine corner kicks, while Lake Erie didn't record one. Grand Valley State advances its record to 6-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 in GLIAC and Lake Erie Falls to 2-5 overall, 0-5 in GLIAC.
