Grand Valley State's women's soccer team dominated Michigan Tech 5-0 on Friday (Sept. 17) night in Houghton, Mich. The Lakers improved their unbeaten streak to 65 regular season games and 43 unbeaten conference matches dating back to the 2006 season. GVSU will travel to Marquette, Mich., to face Northern Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 19) at 12:00 p.m.
"In the first half we didn't play quick enough through the back two lines to get out of pressure and so our opportunities resulted in balls over the top and quick transitions," head coach David DiIanni commented on the game. "In the second half we played fast and dynamic and it resulted in some of the best goals we have scored all year."
Five different Lakers notched goals for GVSU, while six different players recorded assists in the win. Sophomore Ashley Botts claimed her fourth goal of the year at the 24:00 minute, after Jenna Wenglinski and Alyssa Mira recorded the assists. Just 20 seconds later, Kayla Addison notched her fourth goal of the season off a penalty kick, giving Grand Valley State a 2-0 led.
During the second half of play, Erin Hilbert received a pass from Erin Mruz and then kicked it in, recording her second goal of the year. Mruz notched her team-high fifth assist and helped the Lakers to a 3-0 led. At 61:12, senior Kristen Eible claimed her first goal of the year. Hilbert and Jaleen Dingledine set up Eible for the goal, each recording an assist. GVSU got its fifth goal during the 69th minute, when Dingledine notched her second assist of the game and Maria Brown's first assist. The pair got the ball to senior Erika Pitroff, where she knocked in her first goal of the year, giving the Lakers a 5-0 win.
GVSU's tough defensive held the Huskies to just one shot on goal, while the Lakers took 10. Grand Valley State picked up its fifth shutout victory and advances its record to 5-0-1, 3-0-1 GLIAC, while Michigan Tech falls to 2-3-0, 0-3-0 GLIAC.
