The #1 ranked women's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net during 20 minutes of overtime action on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon, ending in a 2-2 tie against Saginaw Valley State. Kayla Klosterman and Erin Hilbert scored their first goals on the year during the match for the Lakers. GVSU will travel to Houghton, Mich., to take on the Huskies of Michigan Tech at 7:00 p.m.
Saginaw Valley State got on the scoreboard first during the first three minutes of action. The Cardinals scored off of a header from 18 yards out, giving them the 1-0 lead. GVSU answered at the 15:54 mark when Klosterman scored off of a corner kick from Erin Mruz tying the game a one apiece.
The Lakers added their second goal of the match during the 39th minute after Hilbert took a free kick from 18 yards out, placing it in the upper left corner of the net. GVSU took the 2-1 lead going into the second half, but with five minutes left to go Saginaw Valley State added the equalizer after a ball was played across the box. After two overtime periods, both teams were unable to scored resulting in a 2-2 tie.
GVSU took three shots during the overtime periods, including two shots on goal. The Cardinals were only able to place one shot on frame and two total shots during overtime play. Grand Valley State outshot SVSU by a 26-13 margin, including a 15-4 advantage on shots on goal. The Lakers took 13 corners kicks, to Saginaw Valley State's seven. Grand Valley State is now 4-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in GLIAC play, while the Cardinals are 3-1-1, 2-0-1 GLIAC.
