The No. 8-ranked Grand Valley State baseball team tallied a GLIAC twinbill sweep over league foe Findlay Thursday afternoon. GVSU won the opener by a 13-2 score, followed by a 17-8 victory in the nightcap. Grand Valley State improves to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action. GVSU will play a GLIAC doubleheader Friday at Hillsdale. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
Game 1
GVSU opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the third as freshman leftfielder Chris Rudenga hit his first career homer. GVSU followed with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth with two outs. Rudenga started the rally with a single to left, followed by a Cody Grice single and Brian Robinson walk. 2B Kyle Gendron drove in two with a single center to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Findlay scored a single run in their half of the fourth, but the Lakers broke the game open with three more runs in the fifth on just one hit. SS Andrew Trepel reached after being hit by a pitch and RF Paul Young walked. C Jared Cowan moved Trepel and Young up with a sacrafice bunt and Trepel scored when Rudenga reached on fielder's choice. Young then scored on a Grice single to center and Rudenga scored on a sac fly by Robinson. GVSU pushed across five runs on five hits in the sixth. Young, Cowan and Rudenga delivered run scoring singles, while Grice drove in a run with a double to right. Robinson added an RBI sac fly. Anderson and Young finished the scoring for the Lakers with solo home runs in the top of the seventh.
Sophomore Kyle Schepel (2-2) picked up the complete-game win, yielding two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Grice and Rudenga each tallied three hits, while Grice drove in a pair and Rudenga plated three. Gendron and Young each delivered two hits and tallied two RBI.
Game 2
Grand Valley State used the big inning en route to a a 17-8 victory over Findlay in game two of the twinbill. The Lakers scored six runs in the top of the third on five hits. C Zach Laupp walked to open the inning and Grice homered to center to give GVSU a 2-0 lead. Rudenga tripled to right and Gendron singled to center to plate Rudenga. 1B Cory Maguire was hit by a pitch and Gendron scored on a single from DH Steve Anderson. Trepel drove in Maguire and Anderson with a double to center. GVSU added two more runs in the fourth. Eric Ponegalek was hit by a pitch and Gendron delivered a two-out single. Maguire drove in two with a double to right center to score Ponegalek and Gendron. The Lakers upped their lead to 11-0 with three runs in fifth on three hits. Laupp drove in Trepel on a sac fly, while Grice drove in a run with a double and Rudenga added an RBI single. Findlay battled back with seven runs on six hits and a Laker error in the fifth, but GVSU put the game away with six more runs in the top of the seventh on five hits. Laupp opened the inning with a walk and Ponegalek followed with a single. Grice singled to score Laupp and Rudenga loaded the bases with an infield single. 2B Paul Phillips doubled to left for a pair of RBI and Rudenga scored on a wild pitch. Trepel added a sac fly and Laupp finished the scoring with an RBI infield single.
Jared Knuth picked up the win, yielding seven runs, five of which were earned on eight hits with five strikeouts. Brad Zambron went the final 2.2 innings, yielding just one run on two hits. Grice drove in four runs on three hits, while Rudenga added three hits. Trepel drove in three on two hits, while Laupp, Phillips and Maguire each drove in a pair.
