Lakers Drop A 6-5 Decision To Assumption College

Clermont, Fla. - Grand Valley State dropped a 6-5 decision to Assumption College Thursday (Mar. 11) afternoon at the NTC Complex in Clermont, Florida. GVSU, which drops to 5-5 overall, will play Millersville (3:30 p.m.) and Merrimack (5:30) on Friday (Mar. 12). GVSU's afternoon tilt versus West Chester Thursday was not played due to rain.

The Lakers scored first in the top of the first inning as RF Jackie Teutsch walked and CF Nellie Kosola singled to right. DH Katie Martin grounded out to short advancing Teutsch and Kosola to second and third. C Carli Raisutis walked to load the bases and 1B Breanne Kronberg walked to score Teutsch and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. However, Assumption was able to get out of the inning as pitcher Chelsea Durso recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Assumption answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on three hits to take a 2-1 lead.

GVSU tied the contest in the top of the fourth on three hits. 2B Maggie Kerrigan and LF Tina Briggs tallied back-to-back one out singles. Teutsch popped out to shortstop, but Kosola came through with a two-out single to center to score Kerrigan. However, the Laker threat ended when Kosola was called out for leaving first base early. GVSU took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth on three hits and an Assumption error. Martin led off the inning with a double to left. 3B Kayleigh Bertram delivered a one-out single to right that scored PR Amanda Rumsey and PR Leslie Bates, who was running for Kronberg who had walked, scored on a single by DH Stephanie Schrader. Assumption tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth with two-out two-run HR.

Teutsch reached on a bunt single to open the sixth and moved to second and a sac bunt from Kosola. Martin grounded out to second base to move Teutsch to third and Teutsch then scored on a wild pitch to give the Lakers a 5-4 lead. Assumption scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth and bottom of the seventh to claim the 6-5 win over the Lakers.

Kosola collected three hits, while Bertram added a pair for the Lakers. Katie Martin was tagged with the loss.
