No. 10 Lakers Take GLIAC Tournament Defeating Tiffin 2-0

Allendale, Mich. - The No. 10 Grand Valley State women's soccer team claimed its fourth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Title after defeating Tiffin 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 7). Sophomore forward Ashley Botts recorded two goals in the victory to help the Lakers advance their record to 17-1-2 in overall action this year. Grand Valley State will now play in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semifinals on Sunday, Nov. 14.

After a physical scoreless first half, the Lakers got on the scoreboard during the 59th minute of the match. Botts took a shot from the left side of the field from 20 yards out. Her shot went over the goalkeeper's head and landed in the upper right corner of the net, giving the Lakers a 1-0 led. Then with just a minute left to play in regulation Botts added her second goal of the match, her 10th of the year, after she passed Tiffin defenders and took the ball down the middle of the field. The sophomore took a shot from inside the box, which sealed the 2-0 victory over Tiffin.

The Lakers outshot the Dragons by a 20-7 margin, including a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. GVSU also controlled by the ball for most of the second half by taking nine corner kicks, to Tiffin's zero. GVSU goalie Chelsea Parise notched four saves in the match and recorded her 12th shutout this year. Parise and the tough Laker backline have yet to give up a goal on their home turf this season. Grand Valley State recorded its 16th shutout with the win and have only allowed five goals on the year.
