#5 Lakers Thump Missouri-St. Louis 8-2

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State dominated Missouri-St. Louis, 8-2, during its home opener Friday (Sept. 4) evening, to earn its second win of the 2009 season. GVSU (2-0-1) returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 6 against Quincy for their second home match of the year.

The Tritons scored early in the first half off of a header at the 3:36 mark, but Alyssa Mira scored her third goal of the season in the 11th minute. Freshman midfielder Erin Hilbert notched her first goal in a Laker uniform at 20:02 to put Grand Valley State up 2-1. Fifteen minutes later, senior forward Irie Dennis dribbled down the right side and crossed it over to Ashley Botts, who scored from five yards out. GVSU out shot UMSL, 13-3, in the first half of play.

During the second half Grand Valley State extended its lead when freshman forward Kayla Addison scored her first career goal. In the 48th minute Addison had a break away and fired a shot into the net from seven yards out. Six minutes later at 54:14, sophomore Megan Brown crossed a pass from the left side of the field to an open Dennis, where she went in close and shot from seven yards out to put GVSU up 5-1.

Addison added her second goal of the match after she connected with Mira and put her shot into the upper left corner of the net. After another Triton goal, Grand Valley State added goals from Botts and Mira, both their second goals of the match, to give GVSU the win 8-2.

The Lakers dominated the Tritons offensively, outshooting them 37-8. In shots on goal, GVSU held an 18-5 edge. Freshmen Addison, Botts and Mira each notched two goals while Brown recorded two assists. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise collected two saves while junior Sam DeNio recorded one.
