No. 4 Lakers Shut Out Ashland in 2-0 Win

Ashland, Ohio - Grand Valley State picked up its third Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon, defeating the Eagles of Ashland 2-0. GVSU has now won 30 straight conference matches dating back to the 2006 season. Kristen Eible and Alyssa Mira both scored goals for the #4 Lakers in the win. Grand Valley State (6-0-1, 3-0) will play a non-conference match-up against Indianapolis on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The Lakers got on the scoredboard first when Eible put a header through the back of the net from a Katie Johnson cross at the 36:18 mark. The goal was her second of the season. Johnson notched the assist on the goal, her first point of the season. Grand Valley State took 19 shots in the first half, while the GVSU defense kept the Eagles to only taking two.

Grand Valley State added its second goal of the game during the 73rd minute when Mira took a pass from senior defender Amber Bloem. Mira was in the center of the box when Bloem crossed it to her where she headed it in for the 2-0 win. Mira and freshman Ashley Botts lead the Lakers with five goals on the season.

Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise only needed one save to record the shutout win, her fifth on the season. The Lakers dominated the Eagles offensively, outshooting them 40-3. In shots on goal, GVSU held a 20-1 edge. Grand Valley State advances its record to 6-0-1, 3-0 GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 3-4-1, 0-3 GLIAC.
