#4 Lakers Open Conference Play with 4-1 Win over Ferris State

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State defeated Ferris State 4-0 on Sunday (Sept. 13) afternoon to start conference play. Four different players scored for the Lakers, while sophomore Erin Mruz recorded two assists in the match. GVSU (4-0-1, 1-0 GLIAC) will host Northern Michigan on Friday, Sept. 18 for its next match.

Grand Valley State struck first during the 16th minute when Mruz found freshman Kayla Addison, for her third goal of the season. The Lakers added its second goal of the match at 29:47 when junior Jaleen Dingledine took it down the right side and crossed it over to sophomore Lindsey Marlow, scoring her first goal of the season.

In the second half of play Ferris State recorded a goal at 75:36 when goalkeeper Chelsea Parise deflected a shot, which was rebounded by the Bulldogs and put through the back of the net for a 2-1 GVSU led. Grand Valley State fought back when freshman Ashley Botts scored her four goal of the season after taking a shot from eight yards out in the 81st minute. Just five minutes later at 86:44, freshman Maria Brown recorded her first goal in a Laker uniform after she headed the ball through the right side of the net of a Mruz cross to give GVSU the 4-1 win.

Grand Valley State outshot the Bulldogs by a tremendous 27-5 margin, and had a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Lakers advances their record to 4-0-1, 1-0 in the GLIAC while Ferris State falls to 0-4-1, 0-1 in GLIAC.
