Lakers Fall Twice In GLIAC Twinbill

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State dropped a GLIAC twinbill Saturday to Ashland. The Eagles claimed an 11-4 win in game one, followed by a 6-3 win in game two. GVSU falls to 33-9-1 overall and 17-7-1 in GLIAC action. Ashland improves to 35-9 overall and 20-3 in GLIAC action.The third and final game of the weekend series will be played Sunday at 12 noon.

Ashland scored three runs with two outs in the top of the first. Three doubles and a single. However, The Lakers answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. RF Scott Cain led off with an infield single, followed by a single to center by 3B Josh Hillyard. 2B Kyle Gendron then tripled to right center to plate a pair. DH Ben Knuth scored Gendron on a groundout to short to tie the game at 3-3. Ashland put six unearned runs on the board with two outs in the top of the fifth on five hits, with the big blow being a 3-run HR to right. The Lakers walked home two more runs with two outs in the top of the sixth. GVSU CF Casey Robrahn doubled to open the bottom of the seventh and with the hit became the GLIAC's all-time leader in career hits with 256.

Danny Richard was tagged with the loss, yielding nine runs, only three of which were earned and nine hits. Richard struckout three and did not walk a batter. Gendron was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

GVSU took a 1-0 lead in game two as 1B Cory Maguire singled to right and SS Steve Anderson moved Maguire to third with single to right. C Bobby Walmsley singled to center to score Maguire. Ashland then scored six runs in the top of the third on four hits. GVSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits and put two runners on in the seventh, but were unable to score.

Andre Benjamin took the loss, yielding six runs on seven hits. Gendron and Anderson each collected a pair of hits.
