Cory Maguire hit a two-run home run and finished with three runs batted in as Grand Valley State defeated Northwood 4-3 in the final day of a three-game set on Saturday. The junior first baseman drove in three runs and scored the game-winner to help GVSU take two-of-three from the Timberwolves.
Senior Ben Knuth threw all nine innings and improved to 6-1 on the season. He gave up three runs on three hits while striking out 10 batters. Maguire and junior Kyle Gendron accounted for all four GVSU runs, with each scoring two. Freshman Steve Anderson notched the only RBI other than Maguire. As a team, the Lakers scored four runs on nine hits and did not commit an error.
Grand Valley State jumped on top with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Gendron hit a two-out single to center field and then stole second. When the catcher's throw went into centerfield, Gendron went to third. Maguire's single up the middle scored the second baseman and made it 1-0 Lakers.
The Timberwolves tied it with a run in the top of the second, but Maguire's two-run shot to right field scored him and Gendron, who reached on a double to left-center field ealier in the inning. Maguire scored on an Anderson single through the left side in the bottom of the seventh to widen the gap and put GVSU up 4-1.
Northwood rallied in the top of the ninth inning and ended up scoring two runs to bring the score to 4-3, but Knuth induced a groundout with a runner on third to end the threat and advance the Lakers' record to 31-5.
