Grand Valley State defeated the Wildcats of Northern Michigan 4-1 on Friday (Oct. 9) evening, picking up their 11th win of the year. GVSU has improved its unbeaten streak of 53 regular season games and 34 unbeaten conference matches dating back to the 2006 season. The Lakers will host the Eagles of Ashland on Sunday (Oct. 11) at 12:00 p.m.
Senior Katie Johnson started the scoring at the 5:41 mark when she knocked in her first goal of the season off of a Jaleen Dingledine corner kick. Dingledine added a goal of her own at 21:10, when she pressured defenders forcing a lose ball, and then placed it in the back of the net, giving GVSU a 2-0 lead. The Lakers added their third goal of the half when freshman Kayla Addison broke away from defenders and took a pass from sophomore Megan Brown. Addison finished by beating Northern Michigan goalie Kara Music for her fifth goal of the season.
GVSU scored once in the second half of play off of a break away from senior forward Irie Dennis during the 51st minute. Northern Michigan got on the scoreboard at 74:23, but wasn't enough to defeat the Lakers.
Grand Valley State dominated offensively placing 20 shots on goal, to just five shots on goal by the Wildcats. Goalie Chelsea Parise recorded four saves in the match, giving her 32 on the season. The Lakers, ranked first in the first Midwest Regional Rankings released this week, improve to 11-0-2, 7-0-1 GLIAC, while Northern Michigan falls to 5-6-1, 3-4-1 GLIAC.
