Grand Valley State defeated Ferris State 2-1 on Friday (Oct. 30) afternoon to complete a third consecutive unbeaten regular season. The No. 3 Lakers have not lost a regular season match during the last three seasons and heads into the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament at 17-0-2, 12-0-1 GLIAC. GVSU returns to action on Friday (Nov. 6) in the second round of the GLIAC Tournament.
Ferris State got on the board first when Bri Borgman scored for the Bulldogs at 19:42. GVSU outshot Ferris State by an 11-5 edge in the first half, including a 4-3 advantage on shots on goal, but were unable to connect.
The Lakers were down for 63 minutes before scoring their first goal. Freshman forward Erin Hilbert scored the equalizer during the 82nd minute, when she connected with sophomore midfielder Erin Mruz. Hilbert notched her ninth goal of the season while Mruz recorded her team-high 13th assist. Just two minutes later at 84:36, freshman forward Maria Brown scored the game-winning goal, when she received a quick pass from freshman forward Ashley Botts. Brown toed it in from inside the box, giving the Lakers a 2-1 win.
GVSU dominated offensively, outshooting them 26-2. In shots on goal, Grand Valley State held a 10-6 edge. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Parise recorded five saves in the match, improving her record to 17-0-2 on the year.
The #3 Lakers captured the 2009 GLIAC regular season title and as the No. 1 seed they will host the GLIAC Championship next week. The semifinals of the tournament will be held at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 6), with the championship game on Sunday (Nov. 8) at 1:00 p.m.
