Grand Valley State picked up its sixth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win Friday (Oct. 2) evening, defeating the Timberwolves of Northwood 4-0. GVSU has now won 52 consecutive regular season games and 33 straight conference matches dating back to the 2006 season. The Lakers will travel to Saginaw on Sunday (Oct. 4) to take on the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State at 12:00 p.m.
Despite the heavy rain, the Lakers attacked right from the beginning of the match and took the first five shots. Two of the five shots went on goal while the other three were high and wide. After Northwood went down and took a shot at the goal, senior forward Irie Dennis scored the lone goal of the half at the 25:35 mark, her fourth of the season.
In the second half of play freshman Ashley Botts put the Lakers up 2-0 when she took a cross from freshman Maria Brown during the 62nd minute of play. The goal was Botts' eighth of the season, which is a team-high on the year. Just six minutes later at 68:48, sophomore Erin Mruz recorded her first goal of the season, giving GVSU a 3-0 lead. Grand Valley State struck again at 71:28 when Mruz drove it down the left side of the goal and sent a cross to freshman Erin Hilbert giving the Lakers a 4-0 win. The goal was Hilbert's fifth of the year, while Mruz recorded her team-high seventh assist.
Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise notched four saves to record the shutout win, her seventh on the season. The Lakers outshot the Timberwolves by a 24-6 margin, and had a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. Grand Valley State advances their record to 10-0-1, 6-0 GLIAC while Northwood falls to 4-5-1, 1-4-1 GLIAC.
