Botts Scores Twice in 5-0 Win Over Ashland

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State's defense didn't allow a shot from Ashland for the entire 90 minutes of play on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 11), defeating the Eagles 5-0. The No. 4 Lakers outshot Ashland by a 41-0 margin, including a 23-0 advantage in shots on goal. GVSU (12-0-2, 8-0-1 GLIAC) now travels to Findlay, Ohio to take on the Oilers on Friday, Oct. 16 at 4:00 p.m.

Freshman Ashley Botts started the scoring at 18:05 when she rebounded a missed shot and put it through the right side of the net from five yards out. Botts recorded her team-best 10th goal of the season when she notched her second goal of the match during the 30th minute. Fellow freshman Kayla Addison broke away from defenders where she found Botts in the middle of the field. Botts took a shot from six yards out that beat Ashland goalie Krista Herbst to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

Grand Valley State continued to pressure the Eagles' backline during the second half and notched its third goal of the match at 55:26. Sophomore Erin Mruz recorded her ninth assist of the year, when she came down the middle of the field and found teammate Jaleen Dingledine, where she knocked it in from eight yards out. Just five minutes later at 60:13, Mruz added her second goal of the season. Botts found Dingledine who crossed it over to Mruz, where she played the ball to the right post, giving GVSU a 4-0 lead. A minute later freshman Erin Hilbert received a cross from senior forward Irie Dennis, placing it in the upper left corner, giving the Lakers a 5-0 win.

GVSU recorded its ninth shutout victory and improve to 12-0-2, 8-0-1 GLIAC, while Ashland falls to 3-8-3, 0-7-2 GLIAC. Grand Valley State has advanced its unbeaten streak to 54 regular season games and 34 unbeaten conference matches, dating back to the 2006 season.
