Grand Valley State advanced its record to 3-0 this weekend with wins over Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. The Lakers have started off the season with three straight wins over GLIAC opponents. GVSU (3-0, 3-0 GLIAC) returns home to Allendale, Mich., to take on Ferris State on Friday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.
The Lakers started the weekend with a convincing 8-1 win at Lake Superior State. GVSU won every set in singles competition, and their only loss came at No. 3 doubles. Maria Gassanova played in her first match of the season and won a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the No. 2 singles spot.
Against Michigan Tech on Sunday, Sept. 28, it was a much closer affair, with GVSU taking home a 6-3 win over the Huskies. Gassanova stayed perfect with another win at No. 2 singles, this won coming with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. She also teamed up with Kately Schaffer to win 8-4 in No. 3 doubles. MTU took both first and second doubles.
Chelsea Johnston, Jackie Shipman, Darylann Trout and Schaffer have all posted perfect 3-0 records in singles competition through the first three dual matches of the season. In singles competition in dual play so far, GVSU has posted a record of 17-1 (.944).
