Grand Valley State defeated Findlay 3-0 to give head coach Dave DiIanni his 100th win in just his sixth season. DiIanni has compiled a stellar 100-13-4 (.872) record during his time at GVSU. Katy Tafler also hit a milestone by scoring her 100th goal 7:57 into the match. Tafler is GVSU's all-time leader in goals with 101. The No. 1 Lakers return to the field on Sept. 28 at 12 noon against Tiffin.
Tafler's two goals give her a team-leading seven on the season, surpassing Irie Dennis, who has five. Erika Pitroff notched her second goal of the season late in the match to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Kristina Nasturzio recorded her seventh shutout by making one save on the lone Findlay shot on goal. The Lakers have shut out eight of their nine opponents this season. GVSU has now won 17 straight GLIAC matches and 28 straight regular season matches.
Tafler started the scoring at the 7:57 mark when she took a cross from Ashley Elsass and beat Oilers' keeper Alicia Tutino. The Lakers put 12 shots on goal throughout the match, scoring on three of them. Tafler also scored her second goal of the match in the first half. In the 23rd minute, Meaghan Robinson took a free kick and lofted it into the box. Joyce Rose flicked the offering on to Tafler, who put it in the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season. That 2-0 lead would hold until halftime.
Coming out of the break, neither team was able to score until late in the match. Pitroff notched her second goal of the season with just four minutes remaining. Dennis played a ball to Erin Mruz, who controlled it and dribbled toward the 18-yard box. Mruz's cross was deflected by Tutino, and Pitroff was able to secure the loose ball and put it into the net for a 3-0 lead by the Lakers.
GVSU outshot the Oilers by a 25-6 margin through the match. The pressure on the attack also showed, as the Lakers held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks taken. Tafler led the team with three shots on goal, while Kristen Eible added two.
