#10 Lakers Run Win Streak to Six with 3-0 Win at Northwood

Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State University picked up its sixth-straight victory with a 3-0 win over Northwood on Saturday afternoon. The No. 10 Lakers won 25-20, 25-23 and 25-20 to advance their record to 9-2 (2-0 GLIAC) on the season. GVSU's next match is at home against Ferris State on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.

The match started quickly with two kills by Danielle Alexander with assists from Jamie Ashmore, which set the tone for the rest of the day. Alexander finished with a match-high 13 kills, while Ashmore led both teams in assists (32) and digs (11). After Northwood took a 12-8 lead in the first set, GVSU came charging back. The Lakers scored the next five points, including back-to-back service aces by Meredith Young, to go up 13-12. The Timberwolves did not lead for the rest of the set, and a kill by Ashmore, set up by Young, gave the Lakers a 25-20 victory.

Grand Valley State fell behind early in the second set and did not take their first lead until after Northwood had reached 20 points. Down 22-19, Ashmore and Alexander put GVSU ahead once more. Two straight kills from Alexander and an ace by Ashmore tied the game at 22-22, and a block by Alexander and Lauren Reber put the Lakers up 23-22. After Northwood tied it at 23-23, Alexander finished the set with two more kills, both assisted by Ashmore.

The third set was controlled by Grand Valley State from the beginning. Ashmore and Alexander both registered an early kill to put the Lakers up 3-1. Back-to-back kills by Rebeccah Rapin extended the Lakers' lead to seven at 9-2. Rapin finished the day with 10 kills in the winning effort. Two more kills from Ashmore gave GVSU a double-digit lead at 14-4 and forced an NU timeout. The Timberwolves never brought the score to within nine points down the stretch and GVSU finished the match with its largest lead of the day at 25-10.
