#10 Grand Valley State Sweeps GLIAC Twinbill At Hillsdale 7-3 and 11-1

Hillsdale, Mich. - #10 Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader at Hillsdale College Wednesday afternoon (April 9). The Lakers claimed game one by a 7-3 score, followed by an 11-1 win in game two. The Lakers improve to 23-4 overall and 9-3 in GLIAC action. GVSU will return to the diamond Saturday (April 12) and Sunday (April 13) for a pair of non-league doubleheaders at Tiffin.

Game 1 - Hilldale took a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Lakers answered with two runs in the top of the second. DH Cory Maguire notched a 2-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. 3B Brad Raj walked and stole second befor C Bobby Walmsley came up with a big 2-run double to give GVSU a 2-1 lead. The Lakers added three runs of three hits in the third. 1B Casey Robrahn continued to swing a hot bat with a single to right. SS Justin Beal followed with a single and Maguire executed a sac bunt to advancd Robrahn and Beal. Raj drove in two runs with a double and later scored an unearned run on a throwing error to give GVSU a 5-1 lead. The Lakers added a single run in the top of the sixth to up their lead to 6-1 before Hillsdale scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth. Robrahn finished the scoring with a double to open the seventh. He was sacraficed to third and then scored on a wild pitch for the final margin of 7-3.

Senior RHP Nick Beach picked up the pitching win, yielding three runs, two earned, on two hits in six innings of work. Beach is now 4-0 on the year. Joe Jablonski pitched a hitless seventh. Robrahn was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Raj and Walmsley each drove in a pair. CF Pat Radde collected two hits n four at bats.

Game 2 - Grand Valley State scored early and often in game two. The Lakers opened with three runs on three hits in the top of the first, followed by twom more runs on two hits in the second. Radde opened the game with a single to center and was sacraficed to second by 2B Josh Hillyard. RF Derek Hinke doubled home Radde and then scored on a 2-run HR from Beal. Walmsley and Nickels opened the second with back-to-back walks and advanced on a sac bunt from Radde. Hillyard singled deep to short to plate Walmsley and Nickels scored on a single by Hinke to push the Laker lead to 5-0. The Lakers pushed five across in the fifth on four hits. Robrahn singled with one out and Beal walked. A Maguire double scored Robrahn, while 3B Eric Kruse and Walmsley drew walks to score Beal. Nickels hit sacrafice fly and a Radde single scored Kruse. Hillyard singled in Walmsley to increase the Laker lead to 10-0. Hillsdale scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth, but GVSU pushed run number 11 across home plate in the top of the seventh.

Brad Raj picked up the victory and improved to 4-0 on the year. Raj yielded one run on two hits in 5.0 innings. Eric Snyder and Cory Maguire each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Radde, Hillyard, Hinke, and Robrahn each collected two hits, while Hillyard, Hinke, Beal and Nickels each drove in a pair.
