The GVSU men's tennis team picked up a big win over Wayne State on Friday by a score of 6-3. GVSU took four out of six in singles play and two out of three doubles matches to claim the victory. GVSU improves to 15-4 on the season, with a 3-1 GLIAC mark. The Lakers will be in action again on Wednesday, as they play host to GLIAC power Northwood. Match time is currently set for 7:30 pm at the Ramblewood tennis courts, but may move to Allendale.
Five out of the six matches in singles play went three sets, as the Warriors were able to give the Lakers all they could handle. In the top single slot, Tony Dang beat Johan Maubacq by a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2 score. Renato Tamashiro was swept in the No. 2 singles position, 6-0, 6-1. Philipp Claus got a much-needed win at No. 4 singles, winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Grand Valley also got victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles position, where Alex Switzer downed Kevin Turnbull, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Brock Plangger ousted Erich Szydlowski, 6-7 (2-7) 6-0, 6-4. Patrick Troy fell in No. 3 singles, losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Doubles play ensured the match for the Lakers, as they took two of three. Dang and Patryk Polus earned a tough, 9-8 (7-1) victory in the top doubles slot. Meanwhile, Switzer and Matt Globerson teamed up for an 8-6 win. Troy and Tamashiro fell in the No. 2 doubles slot, 8-6.
