GVSU Sweeps Northwood 14-8 and 10-9

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader from Northwood Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 14-8 and game two 10-9. GVSU is now 31-11 on the year overall and 17-7 in GLIAC action. The Lakers will be at Findlay Saturday and Sunday for the final GLIAC series of the year.

Grand Valley State scored early and often in a 14-8 victory in game one. The Lakers opened with three runs on four hits. 2B Josh Hillyard singled, followed by a double from RF Derek Hinke. Hillyard and Hinke scored on single to left by DH Casey Robrahn. SS Dan Anstedt then doubled in Robrahn. Robrahn singled in two more runs in a three-run Laker third to give GVSU a 6-0 lead. Grand Valley State added another run in the fourth when Robrahn doubled in Hillyard. Northwood socred a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but GVSU came back and scored three in the bottom half of the fifth on two hits. CF Pat Radde tripled to drive in two runs and Radde scored on a sacrifice fly from Hillyard. GVSU upped the score to 14-2 with four runs in the bottom of the sixth on a three doubles, a triple and a two-run HR from 1B Corey Maguire.

Andre Benjamin upped his record to 9-1 with the win. Benjamin yielded two runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Robrahn was 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored, while C Bobby Walmsley was also 4-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Hillyard scored three runs, while Radde and Maguire each drove in two runs with one hit each.

Game two

1B Cory Maguire singled to center with one out in the bottom of the second, followed by a walk to 3B Dan Anstedt. Maguire and Anstedt advanced on a passed ball and SS Justin Beal walked. C Bobby Walmsley doubled to left center to drive in three runs for the Lakers. Anstedt singled in two runs in the bottom of the third to give the Lakers a 5-0 lead. Northwood scored four unearned runs in the top of the fifth with two outs, but GVSU came back in the bottom of the fifth with five runs on six hits. Hinke and Robrahn opened with singles, followed by Maguire double that scored Hinke. Anstedt tripled in Robrahn and Maguire and then scored on a single by 3B Eric Kruse. Radde doubled in Kruse to up the Laker lead to 10-5. Northwood scored four runs in the top of the seventh and had runners on first and second when David Bowman got the final out with a strikeout.

Anstedt drove in four runs on two hits, while Walmsley plated three runs. Robrahn was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Hinke and Maguire each collected a pair of hits. Nick Beach improved to 5-2 on the year, yielding five runs on five hits in six innings of work. Bowman picked up his sixth save of the year. Robrahn was 7-for-8 on the day, while Walmsley was 5-for-7.
