GVSU Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader From Mercyhurst, Winning 4-1 and 10-4

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader from Mercyhurst Sunday afternoon at the Laker Baseball Field. GVSU won game one by a score of 4-1, followed by a 10-4 win in game two. GVSU improves to 29-11 overall and 15-7 in GLIAC action, while Mercyhurst falls to 23-23 overall and 9-17 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley State will host Northwood Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Game 1

Grand Valley Stat opened with a unearned run in the bottom of the first. CF Matt Nickels led off by reaching on an error by the second baseman. Nickels was sacraficed to second and scored on a single to left by RF Derek Hinke. Mercyhurst tied the game in the top of the second on two hits, a wild pitch and a fielder's choice. GVSU took a 2-1 lead as SS Justin Beal opened the bottom of the second with a single to center. 3B Dan Anstedt singled to right and C Bobby Walmsley sacraficed Beal and Anstedt up a base. LF Scott Cain grounded out to second to score Beal. GVSU added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Anstedt doubled to right center and scored on a double to left by Walmsley. Nickels reached on an errory by the third baseman and Walmsley scored to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead.

Starting pitcher Brad Raj picked up the victory and improved to 5-1 with the complete game win. Raj yielded one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Anstedt was 2-2 with a run scored, while Hinke was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Walmsley was 1-for-2 with an RBI double.

Game 2

GVSU opened game two with three runs on four hits. 2B Josh Hillyard singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. RF Derek Hinke singled to center and DH Casey Robrahn followed with a 2-run double to right center. 1B Cory Maguire reached on a bunt single to move Robrahn to third and 3B Brad Raj hit a sacrafice fly to left to plate Robrahn and give GVSU a 3-0 lead. GVSU added another run in the second and then scored two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Grand Valley State led 8-0 before Mercyhurst scored four runs in the top of the sixth. Anstedt hit a 2-run HR in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin of 10-4.

Joe Jablonski improved to 5-0 with the complete game win. Jablonski yielded four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts an no walks. DH Casey Robrahn was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Hillyard and Hinke were each 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Anstedt drove in two runs with his HR.
