Lakers Drop Two At Wayne State, 7-4 And 10-9

Detroit, Mich. - Grand Valley State dropped a pair of GLIAC games Saturday at Wayne State. The Lakers dropped the first game by a 7-4 score and game two 10-9. GVSU (25-9) will square off at noon Sunday versus the Warriors in game three of a four-game series.

Game 1

Grand Valley State took a quick 1-0 lead, but Wayne State answered with two runs in the second, third and fourth innings, followed a single run in the fifth off starter Nick Beach. GVSU scored one in the third and two in the top of the seventh for the final margin of 7-4. RF Derek Hinke was 2-for-3 with a solo HR and two RBI, while C Bobby Walmsley was also 2-for-3 with a solo HR. Nick Beach was tagged with his first loss of the year, yielding seven runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits.

Game 2

Wayne State hit back-to-back solo home runs to open the bottom of the seventh to claim a 10-9 win. GVSU had taken a 9-8 lead with a run in the top of the seventh.

GVSU scored four runs in the top of the first, only to have Wayne State answer with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Lakers scored on in the top of the second and three in the top of the fourth. Wayne State scored one in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the sixth to set the stage for the seventh.

Hinke was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. 1B Cory Maguire and SS Justin Beal each collected three hits. Maguire drove in pair and 3B Dan Anstedt also drove in two. David Bowman picked up the loss, yielding four runs on six hits in one inning.
