Lakers Take Down LSSU For Second Straight Shutout

The Grand Valley State men's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win against Lake Superior State on Saturday at the Riverview Athletic Club in Grand Rapids. In its second match of the day, GVSU took down Calvin in a close, 5-4 decision. The Lakers improve to 13-3 on the season with the win. Grand Valley State will be in action on Wednesday, April 2nd, as they play host to GLIAC power Northwood. Match time is set for 3:30 pm.

The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0, taking all three doubles matches from LSSU. In the top slot, Tony Dang and Patryk Polus defeated Pawel Werzyn and Brandon Clayton, 8-3. The duo of Patrick Troy and Renato Tamashiro downed Craig Baas and Robert Nelson by a score of 8-4. In the third slot, Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson defeated Travis Toth and Jack Miller, 8-2. Globerson and Switzer have win six matches in a row and have yet to lose in GLIAC play.

In singles play, the Lakers continued their domination, taking all six matches in straight sets. Dang defeated Wegrzyn, 6-2, 7-5 while Tamashiro downed Clayton 6-2, 6-4. Troy was victorious by a 6-0, 6-1 and Claus won easily, 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth singles slot. Rounding out the wins for GVSU were Polus, who beat Baas by a 6-1, 6-4 count and Brock Plangger, who took down Toth, 6-1, 6-3.

In its second match of the day, GVSU beat Calvin in a close match, 5-4. The Lakers dropped two out of three in doubles but took four of the six singles matches to preserve the win. GVSU improved to 14-3 on the season with the victory.
