The Grand Valley State men's tennis team found the win column against Michigan Tech on Friday, winning by a 9-0 score. The match was held at the Riverview Athletic Club in Grand Rapids. With the win, the Lakers improve to 12-3 overall and 1-1 in GLIAC play. The Huskies fall to 2-12 and 0-3 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are busy this weekend, as they will host two matches on Saturday, entertaining GLIAC foe LSSU in the first match and Calvin in the second. The first match will begin at 1:00 at the Riverview Athletic Club.
The Lakers got out to an early 3-0 by sweeping doubles play. The tandem of Tony Dang and Patryk Polus defeated Brett Girard and Matt Tronner, 8-6. Also victorious for the Lakers were Alex Switzer and Matt Globerson, as they downed Alan Parenteau and Brandon Ellefson by an 8-4 decision. Switzer and Globerson have been a force to be reckoned with, as they hold a 17-3 record, and have won four matches in a row. In the third doubles slot, Brock Plangger and Philipp Claus picked up a victory over Justin Foley and Chris Verhulst, 8-1. Plangger and Claus are 3-0 on the season playing together.
Singles play was also dominated by the Lakers, as they picked up all of their wins in straight sets. Dang defeated Girard, 6-1, 6-3, while Renato Tamashiro defeated Ellefson in the No. 2 singles slot, 6-2, 6-0. In No. 3 singles, Troy blanked his opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Troy has a 14-8 overall record and is 11-4 in dual matches. Claus, playing in the No. 4 slot, won by a 6-1, 6-0 count. Claus has the best singles record for the Lakers, as he is 13-2 since joining the team. Rounding out the victories for GVSU were Switzer, 6-1, 6-3, and Plangger, 6-2, 6-2.
