The Grand Valley State men's tennis team dropped a close match on Friday, losing to Ferris State by a 6-3 count. The match was closer than the score indicated, as three of the six singles matches went three sets. GVSU drops to 11-3 and 0-1 in GLIAC play while Ferris State jumps to 6-7 and 3-0 in the GLIAC. The Lakers will be in action next week at home against Michigan Tech, with the match time slated for 3:00 pm.
The Bulldogs got the best of the Lakers in singles play, taking five of the six matches. In No. 1 singles, Lewis DeGeneault defeated Tony Dang in an extremely close match, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. Renato Tamashiro dropped a tough match in the No. 2 singles slot to #33-ranked Akshay Chellappa by a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) score. Patrick Troy was ousted in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 while Philipp Claus fell in yet another close match 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. In No. 6 singles, Brock Plangger was downed in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Alex Switzer earned the only Laker victory, as he defeated Kevin Brundle 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
In doubles play, the Lakers were able to take two of three matches, but it was not enough to earn the win. Dang and Plangger won in the No. 1 slot in a close match, 9-8 (9-7). Switzer and Globerson were also victorious in the No. 3 singles position, 8-5. The last doubles match saw a Bulldog victory with DeGeneault and Ahmet Demir beating Troy and Tamashiro, 8-1.
