#13 Grand Valley State opened the 2008 season Sunday (Feb. 24) with a pair of non-conference wins in Nashville, Tenn. GVSU claimed a 5-2 win over Wayne State in the first game, followed by a 6-4 win over Wayne State. The Lakers will be at Southern Indiana Saturday, March 1 in Evansville, Ind.
Wayne State took a 2-0 lead over the Lakers with two runs in the top of the fourth off starter Nick Beach. Andre Benjamin came in and got the final two outs for the Lakers. GVSU then pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth. SS Dan Anstedt drove in two with a double. Grand Valley State added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. Benjamin held the Warriors scoreless for the final 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. RF Derek Hinke and C Bobby Walmsley each collected two hits and drove in a run.
The Lakers scored two runs in the top of the first versus Northern Kentucky and took a 5-0 lead with three more in the top of the fourth. NKU scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to pull within three (5-2), but the Lakers scored a single run in the top of eighth for a 6-2 lead. The Norse scored single runs in the eighth and the ninth. Sophomore pitcher Danny Richard yielded one run in five innings of work en route to the win. Brad Raj logged two innings of work, Adam Slusher came in for one inning and David Bowman pitched the ninth and earned the save. Freshman C Zach Laupp, junior CF Casey Robrahn and senior DH Pat Radde each doubled and drove in a run.
