Lakers Down Northwood 60-53 for 15th Win

Allendale, Mich. - Crystal Zick and Erin Cyplik played their last regular season home game and it was a good one. The senior guards combined for 27 points and nine rebounds in a 60-53 victory over Northwood. Zick and junior Kim Wyngaard led the Lakers with 18 points apiece. GVSU is now 15-11 overall with a 10-7 mark in the GLIAC. They have clinched a spot in the GLIAC tournament heading into Big Rapids, Mich. for their final regular season game Saturday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.

Zick shot 7-12 from the free throw line and added three assists to her 18-point total. Wyngaard finished with 18 points on 5-10 shooting and was 2-3 from beyond the arc. She also grabbed three rebounds. Cyplik and Nicole Carr both ended with a team-high six rebounds. The Lakers ended at 6-14 (42.9 percent) from long range.

Wyngaard hit a three-pointer at the 17:07 mark to give the Lakers an early 5-4 lead. After two ties at 8-8 and 10-10, Jocelyn Ingram buried a long ball with 11:11 left in the first half to put GVSU up 13-10. A jumper by Zick extended the lead to 15-10 with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the half. Northwood retook the lead with 3:41 left in the half but a Zick free throw and a Wyngaard layup put GVSU back on top, 19-17. Kara Crawford hit a jumper with 22 seconds left to put the Lakers ahead 22-18 at the break.

Northwood did not make a field goal in the last 3:41 of the first half, and the Laker defense held them to just 29.6 percent shooting from the field and 10.0 percent shooting (1-10) from long range. Zick and Wyngaard both had six points in the half, and Cyplik led the team with four first-half rebounds.

Wyngaard started the second half with a layup to put GVSU up 24-18. Four straight free throws by Cyplik put the Lakers up by seven, 32-25. Zick buried a three with just less than 14 minutes remaining to make it a 10-point lead, 35-25. The long ball capped a nine-point run for GVSU. Another three-pointer, this one by Wyngaard, kept the lead at 10 with 12:30 left in the game. Cyplik made it an 11-point game, 41-30, at the 9:57 mark.

The Timberwolves rattled off the next nine points to make the score 41-39. A five-point mini-run, capped off by a three-pointer by Elizabeth Van Tiflin, made the score 46-39. With the score 46-44 and 4:04 left on the clock, Zick hit a jumper to give GVSU a four-point lead. Wyngaard followed that up with two free throws and Zick made one of her own, followed by a free throw, to go up by nine with 1:21 left, sealing the game for all intents and purposes. The 'Wolves closed to within five, but the Lakers held on for a seven-point victory, 60-53.
