Grand Valley State dropped a 68-67 decision Saturday afternoon at Ashland. The Lakers led 35-25 at the half, but Ashland outscored GVSU 43-32 in the second half and hit the game-winner with three seconds left. GVSU falls to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC action, while Ashland improves to 3-2 and 1-1.
GVSU used a 12-5 run to close the first half and freshman guard Wes Trammell hit a 3-pointer with a minute remaining to give the Lakers a 35-25 lead. Ashland opened the second half with an 8-0 and and eventually tied the game at 37-37 with 16:14 left in the game. Sophmore K'Len Morris scored four quick points and Toreau Brown hit a short jumper to give GVSU a 43-37 lead. Grand Valley State led 64-58 with 3:25 left, but another 6-0 run by the Eagles tied the game with just 1:54 remaining. Senior guard Jerret Smith hit one-of-two free throws, but Bylynn Hatcher hit a pair to give AU a 66-65 lead. Smith hit a jumper with :31 seconds left to give the Lakers a 67-66 lead, but after a missed three-pointer by Ashland GVSU missed the front end of a 1-and-1 to give the Eagles the last shot. Bret Wackerly hit the game-winner to claim the win.
Justin Ringler led the Lakers with 15 points, while freshman Nick West added 13 points. Freshman Alvin Storrs added nine points and four assists. Senior Pete Trammell scored seven points in 26 minutes of action, but was hampered by foul trouble. GVSU shot 53.2 percent from the floor and outrebounded Ashland 33-20, however the Lakers turned the ball over 18 times.
