GVSU Escapes With 65-63 Win Over Lake Erie College

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State withstood a furious Lake Erie College rally and held on for a 65-63 win Tuesday (Nov. 18) at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 2-0 on the year and will host St. Joseph's College Monday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m.

The Lakers raced out to a 37-20 halftime lead behind 56.7 percent shooting (17-30) from the floor. GVSU outscored the Storm 20-5 to close the first half. Grand Valley State sophomore forward Mike Przydzial scored on a layup to open the second half half and GVSU led 39-20. However, Lake Erie outscored GVSU 31-10 over the next 11 minutes and took its first lead of the game (51-49) on a three-pointer by Rick Leasure with 7:47 left. The Storm built a 56-51 lead on a three-point play before Jerret Smith hit a pair of free throws, followed by a Justin Ringler three-pointer to tie the game (56-56) with 5:31 left.

Sophomore guard K'Len Morris hit a three-pointer to give the Lakers a 62-59 lead, but Lake Erie pulled to within one (62-61) with a pair of free throws. Freshman guard Alvin Storrs answered with a pair of free throws of his own, but John Dickinson hit a jumper to pull Lake Erie within one again (64-63). GVSU missed three straight free throws before Storrs hit the second of two with 13 ticks left on the clock to give GVSU a 65-63 lead. Senior guard Jerret Smith blocked a three-point attempt by Lake Erie's John Dickinson and a Scott Aston shot at the buzzer came up short to preserve the win for the Lakers.

Sophomore guard K'Len Morris led the Lakers with 15 points, while senior forward Pete Trammel added 12 points and team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Justin Ringler chipped in nine points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Mike Przydial added eight points and seven rebounds. Jerret Smith scored five points and dished out five assists. GVSU held a 36-27 rebounding advantage.
