Grand Valley State lost for the first time this season, as the No. 26 Lakers dropped a tight 5-4 decision to No. 16 Northwood. GVSU is now 4-1 on the season and travels to Detroit to take on Wayne State at 10 a.m. on Oct. 11.
GVSU opened the match in doubles play, where they took one point. Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout won 8-5 at second doubles. Northwood took the points at first and third singles, including a tight 9-7 loss by Jaime Oppenlander and Katelyn Schaffer in the No. 3 slot.
NU took first and second singles, but Schaffer pulled out a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot. Maria Gassanova, who had not lost before the NU match, dropped a close 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 battle at second singles. Trout and Jackie Shipman combined to win fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Trout won by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while Shipman prevailed 6-4, 6-1.
In GLIAC play, the Lakers are 26-4 (.867) in singles play and 10-5 (.667) in doubles competition. GVSU has not lost at the third or sixth singles slots.
