Lakers Shut Down Dragons in 9-0 Win

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State picked up its second win in as many days with a 9-0 victory over Tiffin on Saturday. The Lakers did not lose a set in the win after losing just one point to Ashland the day before. GVSU (8-1, 8-1 GLIAC) will enter the GLIAC Tournament in Midland, Mich. next weekend as the No. 2 seed.

The Lakers won all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-1. Audrey Koopsen and Maria Gassanova took an 8-0 win in the first spot. Jackie Shipman and Katelyn Schaffer also shut out their opponent in the third spot. Chelsea Shipman and Darylann Trout won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles to make it 3-0.

In singles play, Koopsen took the first spot with a 6-0, 6-4 win. Schaffer played the closest match of the day, winning at second singles by a score of 6-0, 7-5. Johnston and Trout both won 6-0, 6-1 at third and fourth singles, respectively. Shipman and Jaime Oppenlander both claimed 6-1, 6-0 victories at fifth and sixth singles.

Overall, the Lakers are 56-11 (.836) in singles play, including a 49-5 (.907) mark in GLIAC play. GVSU has not lost a third, fifth or sixth singles match this season. Schaffer, Shipman and Trout have each won eight consecutive singles matches.
