Grand Valley State secured second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 8-1 win over Ashland on Friday, Oct. 17. The Lakers dropped just one doubles point en route to the convincing win. GVSU (7-1, 7-1) will take on Tiffin on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Allendale.
Ashland took the point from first doubles with an 8-6 win by Maria Gassanova and Victoria Goudy. GVSU responded by taking the points at both second and third doubles. Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout won in the second slot 8-4, while Katleyn Schaffer and Jackie Shipman won 8-3 in the third spot.
In singles play, it was all Grand Valley State. Audrey Koopsen started it off with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles, followed up by a 6-4, 6-4 win by Maria Gassanova in the No. 2 spot. Schaffer and Johnston won at three and four, respectively, with Schaffer taking a 6-2, 6-3 win and Johnston winning 6-2, 6-1. Trout beat her opponent 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles and Shipman won at sixth singles 6-3, 6-0.
GVSU is now 50-11 (.820) overall in singles play, including a 43-5 (.896) mark in GLIAC competition. They have not lost at third, fifth or sixth singles in any dual match. Schaffer, Shipman and Trout have all won their last seven singles matches. In doubles play, the Lakers are 23-10 (.697) overall and 17-7 (.708) in the GLIAC.
