Grand Valley State won every set in a dominating 9-0 win at Findlay on Sunday. Maria Gassanova won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles and the duo of Katelyn Schaffer and Jaime Oppenlander was perfect in an 8-0 win at third doubles. GVSU (6-1, 6-1 GLIAC) will return home for their next match, a GLIAC tilt with Ashland at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.
The Lakers jumped ahead early, taking all three points in doubles play. Audrey Koopsen team with Gassanova for an 8-2 win at first doubles. Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout picked up an 8-3 win at second doubles and Schaffer and Oppenlander blanked their opponents to put GVSU up 3-0.
In singles play, Koopsen took home first singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Gassanova gave up just one point in a win at second singles, 6-0, 6-1. Schaffer and Johnston each earned a point at third and fourth singles, respectively. Schaffer won 6-4, 6-2, while Johnston took her match 6-0, 6-3. Trout won 6-2, 6-2 at the fifth slot, and Jackie Shipman defeated Amanda Molnar 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
GVSU is now 44-11 (.800) overall in singles play, including a 37-5 (.881) mark in GLIAC play. They have not lost a match at third, fifth or sixth singles. In doubles play, the Lakers are 21-9 (.700) overall and 15-6 (.714) in GLIAC play.
